Following Donald Trump’s remarkable return in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, millions of Americans are considering their “great escape,” new research reveals.
A study by the Immigration Advice Service shows that 25% of Americans are considering relocating to another country. The service has reported a 500% surge in U.S. website visitors, while Google searches for terms like “moving abroad” and “how to emigrate” are at an all-time high this year.
The interest is most prominent in coastal cities, with 47% of Los Angeles residents and 35% of New Yorkers exploring options to emigrate. Young people are particularly likely to consider relocation, with 40% of those aged 16-24 planning a move compared to just 14% of those aged 55 and above.
Top choices for relocation include Canada (29%) and the UK (19%), whereas Ireland (7.5%) and Australia (8%) are seeing less interest.
British citizens are also increasingly ruling out the U.S. as a potential destination. A survey reveals that 40% of Brits are now less likely to consider living in America, with women more likely to express this view (50%). Alternatives such as Australia (15%) and Canada (14%) are growing in popularity.
Ono Okeregha, Director at the Immigration Advice Service, commented: “There’s a complex mix of factors that affect a person’s choice to emigrate and their preferred destination. However perceived stability both financial and political is extremely important. The recent US election has sent shockwaves through America and beyond. There is a real sense of uncertainty and we’re seeing this impact both Americans and Brits’ decisions about where they want to live and build their future.”
