Russian politicians have approved new legislation, which would sentence “saboteurs”, to long prison terms. This follows several bombings of military and industrial sites, some that were blamed for Ukraine.
Moscow introduced a series of legislative measures this year to quell any perceived threats at home against Kremlin meddlings in Ukraine. These measures lasted approximately 10 months.
The House of Representatives released a statement stating that deputies approved in its third and last reading a package of steps aimed at “protecting our nation and citizens from terrorist or subversive attacks.”
Vyacheslav Volodin (State Duma Speaker) stated that vandals would be punished as harshly as possible in a statement.
The law will have to be approved by parliament’s upper house and signed off by President Vladimir Putin. It provides for life imprisonment for those who engage in subversive activities or finance or recruit others.
The statement also stated that “training in acts sabotage and creating any type of criminal gangs with a view to committing acts sabotage will be a criminal offense.”
Anyone found guilty of joining a subversive organization can be imprisoned up to 10 years. People found complicit with terrorist or vandalism can face up to two decades in prison.
