Cornwall Insight believes it is unfair to extend the windfall taxes to electricity generators. These generators have been more vulnerable to higher interest rate and commodity price easing.
The energy specialist has compared share price performance over the past 12 month of large electricity generators to listed funds of oil-and-gas companies – which better reflects earnings expectation from investors.
He stated that oil and gas stocks prices have risen 150 percent since November 2021.
ComparativeListed renewable funds peaked at 115 per cent of their price in November 2021. They have since fallen back down to the same level by March 2022.
Power generation companies showed strong correlations to the economic climate, ahead of the anticipated recession in the coming months.

Matthew Chadwick, Senior Research Analyst, has compiled multiple media reports to support the study. Energy profit taxThe North Sea will see fossil fuel operators increase 25-30 percent, and they are likely to be extended to 2028 from the previous 2025 date.
Chadwick claimed that funds in renewables are very sensitive to rising UK interest rate – because they significantly impact component rates in valuations.
Power generation companies are also highly vulnerable to price fluctuations in the domestic market.
BP makes only around 16 per cent of its profits here, whereas oil and gas corporations are more globally diversified.
According to Cornwall Insight, it looks like the gas will continue to exist in the long-term.
Fossil fuels companies are also trading in the energy source that drives the entire value chain – gas – and have been selling forward at ever increasing prices since the end 2021.
This means that unexpected taxes and economic stagnation didn’t drive their prices lower. In fact, they rose to record levels across all fossil fuel giants in third quarter.
Chadwick believes his analysis was helpful. He considers renewable money to be a representative sample from larger renewable projects around the globe, such as onshore wind power and solar power.
He explained: “If this were true, it would be too hasty to assume that there are excessive windfall gains for taxation in this part of the market.
“And if so, the damage that such measures would do to investor confidence and ultimately increase the risk premium on future investments, in the medium to long term, could outweigh the benefits that a windfall tax would reap in the short term.”
Last month, Liz Truss (ex-Prime Minister) revealed a provisional “cost plus revenue” limit,This was to prevent low-carbon generators deriving excessive wholesale costs from soaring gasoline prices. This has driven up costs for consumers, even though renewable energy tends to be cheaper to produce.
However, it is unclear what will happen to these proposals once Rishi Sunak arrives.
