Fashion legend Vivienne WestwoodAt the age of 81.
A post on Vivienne’s official Twitter account on Thursday evening confirmed her death earlier that day. It was “peacefully” and she was surrounded by her family in Clapham, South London.
The post read: “Vivienne continued to do the things she loved, right up until the last minute, designing and working on her art, writing her book, and changing the world for the better. She lived an extraordinary lifestyle.
“Her innovation and influence over the past 60 years has been enormous and will continue into the future. The world needs people like Vivian to make a difference for the better.”
The pioneering designer and innovator was first known for her unique approach to fashion and business in the 1970s. She went on to become an influential figure in the punk scene.
Vivienne has been synonymous with her signature slogan T-shirts and her androgynous designs over the years. She also has outspoken opinions on a variety of social and political issues.
Andreas Krathaler (Vivian’s husband) and creative partner said in a statement that Vivian’s death was devastating.
“We worked together to the end, and she’s given us so much to continue with. Thank you, darling.”
Queen Elizabeth II awarded Vivienne an OBE in 1992 for her contributions to fashion. In 2016, she was made a dame after more than ten years.
She is survived her two sons, Derek Westwood (photographer) and Joseph Corey (activist and co-founder of Agent Provocateur).
