A reader shares his thoughts on Unavowed, the graphic adventure that beat Return To Monkey Island in the top game of the year.
Since the beginning of playing Return to Monkey IslandI was in the mood to play a little adventure game and clear my backlog. Just finished Unavowed. It was something I hadn’t heard about until it was mentioned on a podcast that I listen to. I couldn’t find the GC revision so I believe it went through it.
It begins by the player character being banished and flashbacks reveal that he was possessed at the time Satan intervened in killing and mayhem.
After the exorcism is successful, the strangers inform player character that they are members a secret supernatural police force called Unavowed. Due to the player being pursued for demon crimes by ‘normal police’, he has no choice but join the group.
The game then plays as an adventure game. mass effect (With a bit of Dragon Age: Origins thrown in — the main character has three possible backstories, choice that alter flashback scenes, plus a handful of puzzle solutions) with the team going on missions investigating paranormal phenomena around New York.
Each mission can have two teammates. Each has its own powers and abilities, which will affect the way you solve the puzzles. One can detect spoken lies and one can be a half-jinn. The other can contact interested parties and has connections to Force. The story decisions are often more complicated than simply good versus evil. The game doesn’t judge your choices at any stage, but it does tie into the game’s ending in interesting ways.
While none of the puzzles is particularly difficult, it’s not the main point of the game. The main focus is on writing and storytelling. Characters talk to one another during missions and get to know each other better at HQ. Each mission tells a compelling story that is its own unit, but it also acts as a building block for a larger story.
I think the best thing about the game is its writing. His teammates’ chatter feels natural, and the story has some great surprises. The dialogue is well-voiced and there are solid performances from all. The pixel art graphics are great and create an incredible atmosphere.
It could be the best game that I played this past year. (Hmm, best new game. In preparation for Return, I played Monkey Island 2 once more. I won’t be touching that too much! I will definitely be checking out what Wadjet Eye Games does. It would be great if they could pause the next game. However, due to the game engine used adding the pause function was not as easy as one might think.
Score: 9/10
