More details about Putin’s visit to Belarus
The UK Ministry of Defense shared additional details about Putin’s visit to Belarus earlier in the week.
The information stated: “On December 19, 2022, President Putin traveled to Minsk for talks with President of Belarus Lukashenko. The discussion of the presidents included talk of a “single defense space.”
Although Russia and Belarus prominently announced the deployment of Russian troops to Belarus, it is probable that the Armed Forces of Belarus played an important, but less visible, role in training thousands of newly mobilized Russian reserves.
The possibility of using Belarusian military trainers is an attempt at partially addressing the shortage of Russian military trainers. Many of them are deployed to Ukraine, or have been killed.
Although Russia and Belarus have a long history in military cooperation, training Russian personnel by Belarusians is a role reverser.
“Russia has always considered the Belarusian forces inferior than the Russian forces, and their employment in the Russian military system as instructors is an indication that they are tired.”
