The Defense Ministry claims that Russian schoolchildren are going to receive military training
The British Ministry of Defense discussed Russia’s plan to reintroduce military instruction to schools in the latest round of intelligence.
The Defense Ministry statement said: “On November 9, 2022, Education Minister Sergei Kravstov stated that military training would return to Russian schools, starting from September 2023.
“This paraphrases a program from the Soviet era where students were receiving mandatory military training, a program that ended in 1993. This training included experience in firing Kalashnikovs and first aid in case of chemical or nuclear attack.
After the Russian invasion in Crimea, 2014, Russian officials tried to revive this training. It was hoped that this initiative would improve the quality and quantity of recruits.
“Eight years later, little has changed, the quality of Russian recruits is still poor, morale is low and training is limited. A training program is being developed and will be finalized by the end 2022. It will then be approved.
The Russian Ministry of Defense supports this process and notes that at least 140 hours should be dedicated to this training each academic year.
“It is likely that this training will aim to prepare students with military skills as they approach the age of conscription and to increase participation in mobilization and conscription campaigns.
“It is also possible that this initiative is part of a broader project to instill in the Russian people an ideology of patriotism and confidence in public institutions.”
