The UFC announced that Stefan Bonnar, a former fighter, has died. He played a significant part in the UFC’s growth to become the leading mixed martial arts promotion. He was 45.
Bonnar was drafted into UFC hall of fameAccording to a UFC statement, Thursday died in 2013 from “presumed cardiac complications on his job.” We have not been able to find out any further details.
Bonnar, originally from IndianaHe hasn’t fought in UFC since 2014 and has only gone 8-6 over his seven years with promotion.
He was a contestant in 2005 on the first season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” a long-running reality competition show for the UFC. He reached the finals of the competition and had a brutal brawl with Forrest Griffin.
Griffin won by decision. However the viral attention to the highly entertaining bout is widely credited with exposing this little-known sport worldwide to a larger audience both online and via Spike TV, which broadcasts them.
“Stefan Bonnar was one of the most important fighters who competed in the octagon,” said the UFC president Dana WhiteThe statement said. “His fight against Forrest Griffin changed the sport forever and he will always be remembered. He was loved by his fans and was always there for them. We will miss his presence.”
