Railroad passengers face severely travel disruptionDuring Christmas and the New Year Workers stage a series of strikes for 48 hoursIn December and January in a prolonged dispute over jobs and wages.

The RMTAccording to the union, there are more than 40,000 workers in the area railway networkAdditionally, 14 train operators companies will organize a series of strikes over 48 hours.

A strike will be held during the Christmas period. Members will leave at 6 o’clock on December 24th and return at 7 o’clock on December 27th. Although most trains don’t run on December 25th or 26th, those who plan to travel by train to visit their loved ones on Christmas Day will be affected.

Additional strikes will take place on January 3, 4, 6, and 7, 2023.

RMT has also issued an overtime ban to its members on Network Rail between 18 December and 2 January.

Plus, the predecessorThe Federation of Train Drivers has announced that its members have been reorganized. It will also hit wages on Thursday, January 5thThe year 2023 is in the middle a RMT strike that has left rail commuters stranded on five consecutive days.

ASLEF, which represents 96% of train drivers in England and Scotland, announced that 15 companies, including Avanti West Coast and Chiltern Railways and CrossCountry, East Midlands Railways and Great Western Railway, had voted for strike action.

RMT Secretary General will be notified of the next batch. Mick LynchHe stated, “We feel compelled by the government’s intransigence…We have been confronted with an extremely damaging proposal and our members simply are not in a place to accept the changes made by the companies.”

Lynch stated earlier that the union was sorry for the inconvenience caused by Christmas. However, he urged members to direct their anger at the government and railway employers during the last stretch of work.

Network Rail’s chief negotiator Tim Schoeffler claimed that the union was “playing quickly and fast with people’s Christmas plans” by saying that the recent strike dates were “intentionally targeted at vital engineering works designed for improving the railway”.

These strikes have had similar effects on British travelers this summer and earlier in the autumn. A strike involving approximately 5,000 rail signals would result in half of the rail network being closed and much less service for the rest.

Non-union members, directors and officers will allow the service to operate from 7.30am to 6.30pm over approximately half the rail network.

Schoeffler said, “Nobody can ignore the precarious financial position the railroad finds itself within.” “The beating makes this hole larger and the task to find a solution more difficult than ever.”

“Only through reform, which will not result in anyone losing their jobs, can savings be made which can then be converted into an improved offer. Even though we have made progress in the last two weeks it is still not enough.

“We will not give in and hope that RMT will return at the negotiating tables with a more realistic assessment.”

“We have made real progress in the last two week of talks and for first time in months, we can see the outline of a credible deal,” said a representative of the Rail Delivery Group representing the train operators.

Disputes continue to be raised about wages, working conditions, and job security.

The RMT Federation says its members earn an average of £31,000 a year, “with many making much less, and none seeing an increase in three years”. RMT Federation also claims that the dispute is about “preventing catastrophic downgrades that would directly impact maintenance and accessibility.”
