“I fell into a kind of depressive state, if I can put it that way.
“Which I think, on reflection, is built up for a while. It’s not that you feel sad or that things are difficult.
“It’s an overwhelming feeling. It’s that kind of pull and push that deceives you in some way.
It’s something I’ve experienced in the past so I thought,’squeaks, I know exactly what it is.’ I decided this time that it wouldn’t be a mystery as it pertains to my non-existence, but I’d simply say it like it is.
“Which I found in itself a remarkably empowering thing to do.”
Asked if the political situation contributed to his struggles, Wrag replied: “I think it definitely did.
“When you’re working in a dysfunctional environment and it doesn’t just have to be politics — it can be any other environment or things in your personal life that might be dysfunctional or anything like that, it inevitably has an impact.
This can be combined with the unique circumstances of politics, which can include the pressures of high stakes and the separation from friends, as well as the fatigue that comes with being in constant psychodrama.
“You have to be either a saint or a psychopath to be completely immune to these effects. And so, yes I think it will inevitably have an effect.”
