On a cold December afternoon, hundreds upon hundreds of candles light up Holkham Hall as the light fades. The 18th-century Palladian-style house is the seat of the Earls. It is bustling with activity. Many of the estate’s staff are busy making wreaths, hanging last minute ornaments, and checking out fairy lights. The hall is decorated with Christmas decorations.
Holkham’s Christmas trail tradition goes back to 2011, when it was less formal. It took us four to five years to put the show together,” says Katherine Zoll, Countess from Leicester. She is involved with Christmas taster Katherine Zoll each year in putting the display together – an ever more difficult task. Katherine explains that we decorated the lavish rooms and had actors portray servants, cooks, lepers, and Queen Victorias in the beginning.
“We simply opened the door for people to enter on a set amount of days.”
“The problem was that if the rain started, then all of sudden everyone would pile up,” Mrs. Lister said.
