Guildford Surrey is the worst place in England First class connectionsRoyal Mail data shows that residents are scrambling to get essential deliveries in time for Christmas.
In the three months from September to October this year, only 62.5% of first-class mail was delivered next day to Guildford postcodes.
Postal strikesGuildford residents claim that they have not received a leaflet for two weeks.
The city narrowly defeated Dartford, Kent, to be the worst-performing English town. Ilford and east London also performed below 65%.
Royal Mail must deliver 93% first-class mail within one day of receipt, according to the regulator. Ofcom can impose a 10% penalty on sales of Royal Mail postal services.
Chris Shepherd, 72, waited ten day for a 24-hour tracked package that arrived at his Farnham, Surrey home. On a non-strikeday, he visited the local delivery office to pick up the package. He was told that it was in the warehouse and could not be picked up as it was being delivered by a truck.
Mr. Shepard still has to wait four days for the package, which is a WiFi router.
He stated, “I’m changing supplier. I’m due at the end of the month to find another router from the new supplier to switch the phone line. January 4th.
“I’m just wondering about what’s going on, and I guess we won’t have internet service again for a while as the router won’t function before we switch to the line.”
He said, “Somehow I can completely support them because of the Postal Service treating these postmen in an absolute horrible way…but it does not help the world move ahead.”
Ben Darnton, 55 years old, from Ben’s Collectors Records, Guildford city centre, stated that many of these items were Christmas gifts. Not deliveredIt’s too late to buy gifts for family members
He stated, “We went from Guildford to Oxford yesterday and they weren’t there for us, so we’ll be seeing them in January and giving them to them afterwards.”
Darnton stated that he has also noticed an increase of footfall at his store from postal workers due to recent strikes.
He said, “I’ve noticed an awfully lot of postmen coming to this place as clients because they had all these days off recently.”
“I know them, they are clients, but I rarely see them on Sundays or Wednesdays, but I see them every day of the week.”
The disruption caused by the Royal Mail has also caused problems in the borough council as an entire, as local planning permissions are sought and administered through paper forms as well as letters.
David Belby is the advisor to the Normandy Suite at Guildford. He said that people plan on making applications just like they do throughout the year. Especially around this time of year, people start to think of extensions they would like to start in Spring or moving the house in the Spring or Summer.
He added: “Guildford Borough Council is the 326th worst performing planning council out of 328 councils in the country. They have received over 1000 applications. Do you really believe the postal strike and lack communication will help? It is not.
“Whether we like it or not, we still live in a paper-based society where letters, parcels, packages, information and forms have to be sent out to people. So it’s slowing down a very bad situation indeed.”
Royal Mail was contacted to provide comment.
