Tesco is leading in support of egg suppliers as British supermarkets begin rationing eggs sales in response to bird flu outbreaks.

The UK’s egg farmers are facing an epidemic of avian flu and spiraling inflation, which is driving up feed prices and energy prices.

Tesco has committed £14m of support to the egg industry, it announced yesterday, having already pumped £13.6m into the cause since March.

Dominic Murray, Commercial Director Fresh Foods at Tesco, said: “We know the UK egg sector continues to face severe market conditions as input costs continue to increase, avian influenza causes disruption and adds complications to farming conditions and the supply chain.

“With five-year contracts now in place with our suppliers, and our well-established nutrition model, we hope the support we provide will relieve some of the stress customers are feeling and provide the industry with confidence and protection during these uncertain times.”

On Thursday, Waitrose sat to hand over £2.6m to the egg supply chain, as it sought to move away from rationing.

Marks & Spencer has joined Tesco, Asda & Lidl as the latest grocers in limiting box sales.

Waitrose stated that it did not intend to introduce borders and said it was confident in the availability of British Free Range eggs online and in stores.
