Sunak to Block Scotland’s Gender Recognition Law

The Prime Minister stated that he wanted to strengthen their working relationship and continue to talk about their shared challenges and our efforts to help people in Scotland.

HuffPost UK understands that this noble intention will be broken next Wednesday if the Sunak government attempts to stop a Holyrood bill from becoming law.

The relevant legislation is Gender Recognition Reform ActThe Scottish Parliament approved the measure before Christmas, following a fierce debate that highlighted divisions within the main parties.

The new law will make it easier to have sex with transgender people by reducing the time it takes and lowering the age it can occur.

The Westminster government does not intend to introduce a similar bill. This raises legal issues about how the Scotland only law will affect equality law across the UK.

London ministers could block Holyrood legislation under such circumstances by activating Section 35 of Scotland Act – which created Scotland’s Parliament in 1999.

This would prevent Speaker of the Scottish Parliament delaying sending the Bill to King for royal assent.

According to sources in the British government, Alistair Jack, Secretary of State for Scotland, will announce Wednesday that Britain will block the bill.

It arrives at a time when it is most needed. SNPWestminster is already being accused of “denying democracy” by refusing to allow another independence referendum. This would be political equivalent to throwing a match into an arsenal of fireworks.

Sunak, when asked about the cause while on holiday in Scotland, would donate a few dollars.

He stated that “This is clearly a sensitive topic and I know there was strong discussion and exchange of opinions on it as the bill was passed in Scotland.”

“My concern is the effect of the bill across the UK.

“There could be effects across the UK that need to be understood and we need that awareness. That’s why we’re doing that, and once the government has received final guidance it will decide the next steps.”

Stephen FlynnLeader of the Scottish National Party in Westminster, has offered a preview of his party’s reaction if the UK government vetoed Gender Reform Recognition Act.

He stated: “This goes right to the heart of democracy in Scotland because, the democratically elected Scottish parliament has passed legislation regarding gender recognition. It’s likely that the UK government would try to undermine this.” This is simply not possible.”

It is not a problem for a SNP.

The largest revolt against the party’s leadership in the Scottish Parliament since 2007 was the debate in which some Scottish MPs voted against what they consider an attack on women’s rights based upon gender.

The SNP’s Westminster Group is also split with Edinburgh South West MP Joanna CherryOne of the staunchest critics of the Scottish government’s position.

Will these SNP rebels back a UK government that blocks a law they hate or will they fight behind sturgeon over what they claim is an attack upon devolution?

HuffPost UK was informed by one constitutional expert that the dispute will end at the High Court. It ruled in November in favor of the Scottish Parliament. It does not have the authority to organize its own independence referendum.

They stated: “Using such an extreme mechanism like a veto to power rather plays into SNP’s narrative Westminster denies democracy which seems to be politically risky.”

“like We are approaching the 25th anniversary of the transfer of power, and it is a big moment.”

Despite his warm words of cooperation with the Scottish government it seems certain that Snack is only days away from a constitutional crisis which could lead to the end of the UK’s future.
