Continued growth of women's sports is among Deloitte's sports business predictions for 2023
Deloitte’s sports predictions for 2023 include continued growth of women’s athletics.

Tim Bridge, Deloitte, looks back at the past 12 months and makes a forecast for his sports business in 2023.

The men’s FIFA World Cup closing whistle was the culmination of an incredible year for sport, which included the Winter Olympics and Commonwealth Games as well as the Rugby World Cups and Women’s Rugby Union.

In addition to the field, we have seen new investors making huge strides in this industry. National conversations have also erupted about how sports can contribute to societal growth.

We expect another great year for the sport in 2023, despite the fact that the calendar will be less full of international tournaments in 2023.

These are the top three areas we expect sports leaders should focus on.

Sport for women

The Lionesses’ victory at the Women’s Euro in June saw record-breaking support from fans, clubs, clubs, and communities, inspiring content creators across the country, to put more effort into the development of women’s sports.

The public and the industry are becoming more aware of the need for world-class female athletes to receive the same recognition, reward, and investment as men.

Since then, the average attendance to the Women’s Super League increased by 200 percent. Meanwhile, the Women’s Rugby World Cup Final attracted 42,579 people, a world record crowd. There were also 1.7 million viewers in the UK who tuned in at 6:30am. The WNBA’s basketball league saw a 16% increase in viewers between 2021 and 2022.

But, the pace of change in a conference room is slower. The highest-paid football clubs around the world. Only 11 percent of the club’s board seats are held by women. For comparison, approximate 40 per cent of the FTSE 100 centers in the UKIt is now held exclusively by women.

The industry must continue to work towards inclusion in sport and push women’s leagues, clubs, and teams towards long-term financial sustainability.

The growth of women’s sport and women’s representation within the sports business will create new revenue streams and attract new fans, investors, and sponsors.

Merger and acquisition

In the first ten months of 2022 there were approximately 200 sports mergers and acquisitions. According to Deloitte analysis.

The United States was home to the largest number of deals in competitions, tournaments, and governing bodies. However, 80 per cent of medium-sized deals, which are usually clubs or teams, were done with organizations based in Europe.

The strong activity was supported in part by investor confidence in the industry’s resilience during economic uncertainty and the perception of sports assets as an alternative risk profile to diversify investment portfolios.

Numerous sports organizations, however, have received warm investor interest to fund ambitious transformational and growth programmes.

Todd Boyle's acquisition of Chelsea was a highlight of a busy 2022 for sporting mergers and acquisitions, and Deloitte expects that to continue into next year.
The acquisition of Chelsea by Todd Boyle was a highlight in 2022 for sporting mergers. Deloitte expects this trend to continue into next.

Because of the sheer size and scope of the opportunities, sports is becoming an asset class that institutional investors cannot ignore. It can be difficult to navigate this sector with so many entry points, such as whether you want to invest or not in sports organizations.

In 2023, there will be more capital flowing into professional sports. Discussions about operating models and financially sustainable strategies are likely to increase. Although the potential for investors to make a profit from the sport is appealing, it takes persistence to succeed.

Flow

This is what Deloitte anticipates in 2023 The streamers will spend more than $6 billionGet the best sports rights in the most important markets worldwide. To put this in perspective, the total content spending of all streaming services will reach $50 billion by 2021.

There is a growing interdependence between streaming service providers, and the largest sports leagues.

Broadcasters view live sports content as the crown jewel of content that can attract and – most importantly – keep subscribers.

For sports organizations, streaming sites offer the opportunity to generate more income from their rights, while also attracting the attention of a younger – sometimes more international – fan base.

However, fragmentation across platforms has its disadvantages. Fans may not be able to access the content they want when they want. It may also be more costly.

Sports have their own set of challenges for streaming platforms. Sports events are more difficult to stream technically than other broadcasts because they are fast-paced and have a higher framerate than other genres.

In order to attract large numbers, sports broadcast content must be high-quality and action-packed in 2023.
