South KoreaIt said Monday that it had scrambled fighter and attack helicopters and fired warning shots following North Korean drones violating its airspace.

This is the first time in 2017 that North Korean drones entered the airspace of a rival.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff stated in a statement that several North Korean drones crossed over the inter-Korean boundary and were detected on Monday in South Korean territory.

News1 Korea reported that a drone flew briefly over Seoul, the capital.

Yonhap reported that a Joint Chiefs of Staff official said that the South’s military detected several unidentified objects, presumably drones at Gyeonggi Province’s border areas at 10.25 am.

The report stated that the vehicles flew through the military boundary separating the north from the south and were then seen flying in the areas of Gimpo Island, Ganghwa Island, Paju.

A KA-1 light attack aircraft, deployed by the South, crashed in Hoengseong county, approximately 140 km east from Seoul at 11:39 a.m. For a reason not revealed by the country’s army.

Two pilots flew the plane safely.

Consequently, fighting between civilians at Incheon-Gimpo airports was temporarily suspended.

The violation of airspace comes just days after North Korea launched two long-range ballistic weapons on Friday and two medium range ballistic missiles five day earlier.
