According to the International Energy Agency, solar energy will be the largest source of electricity in the world within five years.

According to the Paris-based climate agency, Russia’s invasion in Ukraine has led to a huge increase in renewables. The world is expected to add twice as much renewable energy over the next five years than it did in the past twenty years.

The global renewable energy capacity is expected now to reach 2,400 gigawatts, (GW) in the 2022-2027 period. This amount is equivalent to China’s entire energy production today.

The IEA projects that renewables will account to more than 90 percent global electricity expansion in the next five years. They will also surpass coal to become a major source of global electric power by early 2025, according to IEA projections.

This is a 30 percent increase in renewables that was predicted a year ago. This shows how quickly governments have put extra policy weight behind them.

This will result in solar power becoming the main source for electricity by 2027.

The latest results were published on renewable energy sources 2022It is the International Energy Agency’s latest annual report on the sector. The IEA argues the war triggered a ‘tipping point’ that forced countries to prioritize energy security domestically.

Fatih Birol (Executive Director of the International Energy Agency) stated, “This is a clear illustration that the current energy crises can be a historic turning-point towards a cleaner, safer energy system.”

He also suggested that increasing renewable energy generation would help to keep the Paris agreement’s goals in reach. The Paris agreement is a global agreement where countries promise to limit global temperature rise to “well below” 2°C from preindustrial levels.

Downing Street has set its ambitious domestic targets Promoting renewable energy generationThis includes increasing offshore wind capacity to 11 GW to 50.GW by the end the decade, increasing solar power generation to 70.GW by 2035, as well as hydrogen production from less than 1GW to 10GW.
