Russia claimed that 600 Ukrainian soldiers were killed by Russia on Sunday as a retaliation to the alleged attack on Ukrainian New Year’s Eve. Hundreds of Russians were killed.
Russia’s Defense Ministry stated that it had launched a massive missile attack on a building in Kramatorsk (in eastern Ukraine) and bombed it.
It claimed that the building was being used for temporary barracks and had targeted two dormitories that held about 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers.
“In response the Kyiv regime’s criminal strike in the first few minutes of the new Year against Makevka’s temporary residence facility in Makevka,” the Russian Defense Ministry stated in a statement.
The statement was made in reference to an attack on New Year’s Eve in Ukraine, where it claimed that it had killed around 400 Russians following an attack on barracks with Himars.
If confirmed, the Russian attack will likely be the most devastating attack on troops in the war.
Some observers are skeptical about Russia’s claims, as there have been no reports from the ground to support them.
Additionally, Ukraine took advantage of Russia’s error in gathering hundreds in one place on New Years Eve – making it a vulnerable target. Some believe it is unlikely that Ukraine will repeat the mistake.
Ukraine has not yet commented.
