Ronnie O’Sullivan clearly wants and needs to achieve results at the World Grand Prix, as he tries to qualify for the crucial tournaments in the remaining season.
Rocket may have won Hong Kong Masters and Champion of Champions in this campaign, however, neither Rocket nor the ranking points are theirs and their performances at the ranking events are slightly below par.
O’Sullivan is a top 32 player on O’Sullivan’s one-year list. O’Sullivan will be participating in the World Grand Prix, but he’s still not ready for the Players Championship (top 16) or Tour Championship (8).
The current world champion is 21st on the list. He is moving in the right direction, having defeated Barry Hawkins 4-0 in Tuesday’s first round. However, he is well aware that he needs wins. He is also focused on results and is very aware that other tournaments may not be as turbulent. Won or lost.
“Barry wasn’t playing well, he lost many balls, he gave some chances to me. O’Sullivan, who had defeated Hawkins comfortably at Cheltenham, said that Barry had another day of pinching tires and he could easily win the game.
I love to play, I enjoy being competitive, so I need the ability to run well here as well as at Welsh. [Open] Otherwise my season is pretty much over until… I got 6 Reds and Sheffield [World Championship]If I don’t have a great run here and Wales, I’ll return to the show circuit to continue working until the Worlds cycle.
“It’s no that I don’t want to play in tournaments. If it is a league tournament for me, some will do. It’s match training. I decided to play as much tournaments as I could just to practice for the match. Keep your rust away.
“If you don’t have matches, it’s not a good idea. It doesn’t matter what tournament it might be, but if you aren’t in the next few matches, your only option is to play some pool tournaments, or go on the exhibition circuit.
O’Sullivan was not the only big name to make an appearance in the opening round. Judd Trump, Mark Williams and Mark Williams also shaved their heads Tuesday after their Masters final on Sunday.
Trump stated that Trump’s 4-2 win over Hossein Vaffaei was one his best performances so far this season. Williams was outstanding in his 4-1 win against Jimmy Jones, hitting 104 and 82, 100, and 121.
“I didn’t have a drink after the final game, so there was no hangover, just a little jet lag from flying home at 3:30 in the morning,” Williams said of his 10-8 loss to Trump on Sunday.

Already there were obvious injuries with Neil Robertson falling against Xiao Gudong Monday, Mark Selby being beaten on Tuesday by Nobun Saengkham, Stuart Bingham being knocked down by Ding Junhui on Tuesday afternoon.
