A £250m plan to replace Queen’s Royal Yacht Britannia has been called off Rishi Sunak.
Boris JohnsonHe wanted a successor to Her Majesty’s former cruise ship, which is now a tourist attraction in Edinburgh. But the new prime minister has other plans.
These plans were heavily criticised by MPs last year. Mr. Sunak officially sunk them as Whitehall prepares to cut in Jeremy Hunt’s fall statement on November 17.
Today’s announcement was made by Defense Secretary Ben Wallace, who stated that he would prefer a new control ship (MROSS), over a national flagship.
“In the face Russia’s illegal and unjustified invasion in Ukraine, and Putin’s reckless disregard of international arrangements designed to preserve global Order, it is right we prioritize delivering capabilities which protect our national infrastructure,” he stated.
This means that he has also “ordered to terminate the major national competition with immediate effects to deliver the first MROSS”.
Wallace stated to MPs that MROSS would protect critical defense and civilian infrastructure as well as improve our ability detect threats to cables and seabed.
Shadow Defense Secretary John Healy welcomes the news that “former prime minister’s vanity project” has been scrapped, and that spending will now be directed to “purposes that will aid in the defense the country”.
The ship was expected in the waters by 2025.
The Telegraph revealed that the project was scrapped by two private consortia that had bid for it.
In 2021, The House of Commons Defense Committee warned of “no evidence of an advantage for Royal Navy in acquiring National Flagship”.
