Rishi Sunak has appointed an independent Ethics Advisor, following the resignations of two of the previous incumbents during Boris Johnson’s premiership.
Sir Magnus Lowry CBE was appointed as the new No. 10 Independent Adviser on Ministers’ Interests.
Sunak wrote to Lowry to say that he had “reissued the Ministerial Act”, in which the prime minister asked ministers to work “like never before” in order to win the confidence of the British people in a new introduction.
Johnson’s independent advisor Lord Christopher Geidt, resigned after he decided to violate international law over trade policy. However, it also came after months-long allegations from the party.
Gedet’s predecessor, Sir Alex Allan was fired in 2020 after Johnson ignored his report that Priti Patel had intimidated civil service personnel at the Home Office.
Sunak was forced to hire an ethics advisor after the position was left empty following Gedet’s resignation.
Sunak stated that he was clear in saying that he expects the government he leads to be fair and professional at all levels.
“It is my priority to appoint a qualified adviser to help ensure these standards are upheld. The British public can have confidence in the Government’s commitment to the Seven Principles of Public Life.”
Lowry stated that he would strive to fulfill the important responsibilities in his role with integrity.
He stated that his first priority would be to examine the declarations of interests made by appointed ministers during your tenure and to prepare the initial list of ministers’ interest for publication.
