Nineteen of them reached the round 16 or quarter-finals. This means that they participated in four to five matches. Raphael Varane from France and Lisandro Martinez from Argentina made it to final.

Their players have made it to the last 16 or quarterfinals, which is 11 more than they did in the previous round. However, they will not be playing for two-and-a half weeks when second-placed City resume Premier League play. Leeds United on December 28.

Chelsea and Arsenal each had nine and a half World Cup starters. Eight and seven qualified for the quarter-finals or 16 respectively.

Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic placed third for Croatia. Arsenal defender William Saliba was part France’s run to final but has barely played in all of the tournaments.

The Blues, eighth in the table are returning to home football on December 27 at Bournemouth.

Arsenal, which held a five-point advantage at the top of Premier League until the World Cup break, will host West Ham United on Boxing Day.

While some players made it through, Arsenal could argue they were the worst hit as Gabriel Jesus, a key striker for Brazil, sustained a serious knee injury while on duty.

Tottenham Hotspur are the Premier League team with the most players who have played in the final, with three.

Defender Christian Romero Lifting the cup with ArgentinaFrance’s goalkeeper Hugo Lloris won the title, while Ivan Perisic, a winger for Croatia, finished in third place.

Liverpool was relatively unaffected, with six of the first-team players absent, including Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Thiago alcantara.

Five of their players were knocked from the groups but all five of them, including Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson from England, were eliminated by quarter-finals.

While Ibrahima Konate, the French Defender, has been part of the French squad as well, he has not played in the Premier League this season and so is short of the 500-minute threshold.

Sixth-placed Liverpool was back in action at Aston Villa at Boxing Day tea.

What clubs are least affected by the tournament?

Southampton, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth were the three countries that suffered the most from the World Cup. However, none of their players participated in the knockout rounds in Qatar.

Each team had two tournament starters, but none made it past the group stage.

Aston Villa also had two World Cup regulars, Emiliano Martinez, who went on to win a medal as a winner’s medalist.

It remains to be seen if he returns to the list for the match against Liverpool, December 26.
