Anita Pointer was one of four sibling singers who had great success and fame under the name The Pointer Sisters. She has now passed away at the 74th anniversary.
Roger Neal, Roger’s publicist, stated that the Grammy Award-winning singer died Saturday while she was at home with her family. The cause of death wasn’t immediately known.
Her sister Ruth, brothers Aaron and Fritz and granddaughter Roxy said in the statement: “While we are deeply saddened by the loss of Anita, we are comforted to know that she is now with her daughter Jada and her sisters John and Bonnie and at peace.
“She was the one that kept us all close and connected for so long.”
Jada Poynter, Anita’s only child, passed away in 2003.

Anita and Ruth Poynter were the daughters of a pastor. Anita, Bonnie, and John Poynter grew-up singing at their father’s Oakland church.
The group’s 1973 debut album was self-titled and featured the iconic song Yes We Can Can.
The singers are most well-known for their hits including I’m So Excited and Slow Hand. They were also awarded a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame 1994.
Break Out, the 1983 album, went three platinum and won two American Music Awards. Neil said that the group won three Grammy Awards between 1973-85 and had 13 US Top 20 songs.
He said that they were also the first African American band to perform on Grand Ole Opry and the first contemporary act to be performed in San Francisco Opera House.
Bonnie Pointer, who had left the group in 1977 signed a solo deal with Motown Records, but to very limited success.
Anita Poynter described her 1990 departure as “devastating”. “We did a show on the night you left, but then we just hung around. It wouldn’t have worked without Bonnie.

The group recorded until 1993 in various ranks, including younger relatives.
June Pointer, 52 years old, died from cancer in 2006.
Anita Pointer announced Bonnie Pointer’s passing in 2020 due to cardiac arrest.
Bonnie stated in a statement that “The Pointer Sisters wouldn’t have happened without Bonnie.”
