One person was reported to have been killed and several others missing in the explosion and fire that occurred in an apartment block in Jersey.

Robin Smith, Chief Constable of Jersey State Police, stated at a news conference that about a dozen residents were missing following an explosion in St Helier south of the island.

Smith stated that the fire service was called to the scene the night before after residents reported gas smells.

Smith described the scene in horror and warned of the possibility that there would be more deaths.

He said to reporters: “We have an entire three-storey structure that has collapsed. This is what demolition experts would call a pie that fell almost straight.

“There’s also damage to a nearby building as well, another block of flats that the firefighters need to make to safe. It’s a pretty devastating sight, I’m sorry to say.”

When asked how many people are believed to be missing, he replied: “Given destruction of the building it is difficult to accurately assess the numbers.

“We are looking at the area, which currently houses about a dozen people.

“This number is subject to change, but it’s the one we are working on.”

When asked if more deaths were possible, Mr. Smith responded: “I don’t want speculation on these kinds of things…but there has to be an acknowledgment we could have had more deaths.”

The police chief stated that the building is being managed by Andium Homes and that its CEO is “working very hard to take care of” those affected.

Smith stated that police would investigate the gas supply to determine if there was a safety problem.

Jersey residents have been advised by emergency services not to use A&E for any reason, and police have advised residents to avoid the blast site, which has been sealed off.

Police stated that the fire was under control, but emergency services were still performing important work at the scene.

The force also said in a statement: “Following the explosion this morning in Hauts-du-Mont, Pierre Road, a number of residents are still missing.

“Emergency services are working at the scene and have begun a surface search of the site.

“Relatives can be contacted by Family Liaison Officers.”

Christina Moore, Jersey Premier said the area would be under investigation for “a few days” as her condolences were extended to the families.

Speaking alongside Mr Smith at the conference, she said: “It is a huge shock to everyone this morning, but above all, we offer our condolences to the affected families and we are all thinking and praying for those who are worried about their loved ones.

“We share their concern.”

Ms Moore stated that she will keep the islanders informed as the investigation progresses.
