Nicola Sturgeon promises that Scotland’s NHS will be ‘back on track’ despite ‘grave” safety concerns

Nicola SturgeonAs the alarming scale and severity of the crisis that engulfed two of Scotland’s largest health boards was exposed, he promised to “return Scotland’s NHS back on track” in the new year.

The first minister of Scotland promised that he would do everything to support the public and the health services, “in particular the recovery form the epidemic” in a New Year’s message.

But she intervened when it was discovered that doctors at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH), were planning to announce the news. Big accidentThis week’s events indicate that public safety has been compromised.

BBC received a series of messages stating that every spot in the emergency room was occupied by patients waiting for beds. There were no resuscitation beds, and there was an eight-hour delay before ambulances could offload patients.

One of the comments was: “We are now in unable to provide safe and critical care.” Another said, “This is without any doubt the worst shift I’ve ever had. I have never been more convinced that overcrowding and refusing exit are real harms to patients.”

NHS Grampian is appealing to staff who were on holiday over the festive period to come back to work to help its hospitals deal the “extreme degree of stress”.

Chiefs of Health made the appeal via their official Twitter account. Staff who may be on an annual leave but are available for work were asked to get in touch with them as soon as possible.

Health and social services system ‘broken’

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde refused to declare a major event on Thursday. However, Dr Ian Kennedy, president and CEO of the British Medical Association, in Scotland, called for the declaration after he declared that the system of health and social services was “broken”.

Dr Kennedy claimed that NHS Scotland was “already deceased” according to colleagues, with “exhausted and exhausted” staff struggling to cope.

He claimed that ministers’ pleas for help “fall on deaf ears”. Sturgeon and her ministers repeatedly blamed this epidemic for the current situation. However, doctors criticised them for poor manpower planning that led to record staff shortages.

She stated that she could promise her that the Scottish Government would continue to support those in greatest need now and look to the future with optimism, determination, and a sense of urgency.

“We will also do all we can to support our precious services, and help the NHS recover from the pandemic.

The health service is facing an “incredibly dangerous” development

Labor, however, stated that the QEUH’s serious issues were “an incredibly serious event that reveals the crisis at the NHS.”

Jacqui Bailey, the party’s health spokesperson, stated that QEUH staff were placed in an impossible position and that patients’ lives are at stake. We must now take action to support frontline NHS staff in need of assistance.

A spokesperson for NHS GGC said that they have an escalation strategy that would allow them to make public any major incidents. They also closely monitor the safety of their departments and patients at all time and keep this under review.

“Our services, like the rest of Scotland, are under severe pressure. We have seen significant Covid, influenza, norovirus and other cases. Our staff is doing everything they can to meet that demand.”

The NHS Grampian wrote that “We are currently experiencing an extremity level of stress within our healthcare system, owing to the increased number of acutely ill people arriving at hospital and the difficulties in offloading them to community settings.

“We are asking all employees who are not working – and may be on annual leave – but will be available to work, to contact the location and capacity as soon as possible.”

Tess White, the shadow secretary of the Scottish Conservatives’ public health department, stated: “This desperate appeal by the NHS Grampian reveals how deep the crisis within our A&E units.

“The sheer scale of this appalling situation has spiraled so out of control that exhausted employees are now being asked to come in on their days off when they should be enjoying time with their families.”
