Lamar Johnson has always maintained his innocence. After nearly 30 years in prison for a crime to which two others have since confessed to, a hearing began to determine whether Johnson’s conviction should be overturned.
The hearing began Monday MissouriKim Gardner, St. Louis Circuit attorney, supporting his motion for his conviction to be overturned. CBS News reported.
Missouri Attorney General’s Office claims that Johnson was convicted properly for the 1994 murder of Marcus Boyd (25). According to the office, Johnson should be kept behind bars.
The hearing at St. Louis Circuit Court will last approximately five days. Johnson said kmovHe is optimistic about hearing.
“I believe that God exists. I believe that God intended for me to spend the rest my life in prison. … I believe you can lie, you may deny, but you will eventually find a way. … He said, “I’m comfortable with that.”
He stated that he believed any judge would find him innocent. He was sentenced in 1995 to life imprisonment for shooting Boyd because he owed $40 in drug debt.
Phil Campbell, another suspect, pleaded guilty and was sentenced for seven years in prison.
Johnson claimed that Johnson was with his girlfriend during the murder
Johnson claimed that he was at the crime scene with his girlfriend miles away when the murder occurred. The prosecution’s sole witness withdrew their testimony, identifying Johnson as the one who shot Mr. Boyd. Two other men later confessed that Johnson was not involved in the murder and they both pleaded guilty to the crime.
Ms. Gardner initiated an investigation along with the Midwest Innocence Project. It exposed prosecution misconduct and fake police reports, as well perjury. These accusations were denied by both the attorney general, and the former investigator who worked on this case.

The issue can be made into a political fight
Eric Schmidt, Missouri Attorney General, requested last week that Ms. Gardner be punished by the court after she was accused of concealing evidence.
Schmidt stated that Ms. Gardner did not inform him about gunshot residue on Johnson’s jacket after his arrest. Schmidt stated that the evidence was withheld because it tends to prove Johnson guilty.
Ms. Gardner, a Democrat; Mr. Schmidt, a Republican. He claimed that she groped her. She replied by saying that the accident was caused a miss email. Johnson stated. kmovHe does not own the jacket.
New state law makes it easier and more cost-effective to hold new hearings
Johnson’s insistence that Johnson is innocent led to a new state law last year which simplified the process for prosecutors in obtaining new hearings in cases involving new evidence of a wrong conviction.
Kevin Strickland was a second man convicted. The prosecutor informed him that the evidence against him had been withheld or proved inaccurate. He was convicted of a triple crime in Kansas City and spent over four decades in prison before being released.
Talking to kmovJohnson was emotional when he spoke of a time ten years ago when a detective offered to take over his case. The coroner stated that they would first attempt to prove Johnson guilty, but if they couldn’t do so, they would be capable of proving his innocence.
“I always get emotional when I talk about this. Because I knew that someone would walk in like that. Once they were convinced they would fight for me.”
Conviction based upon critical witness testimony
Johnson was convicted based on witness testimony, even though the killer was wearing dark ski masks at the time of shooting. His lawyers argued that Johnson was paid $4,000 for his testimony, and that he had just revealed that he was being pressured by police officers and prosecutors. KMOV reported.
This case involved a lot politics, and a lot opposition. It wasn’t even about me. It’s about larger things. It doesn’t change my fact that it affects me. “I know.” Johnson said kmov.
“This is just a moment that I’ve always been waiting for. I’ve been fighting for this cause for over 28 years. And so, I’m really ready to be able to make this case, present the evidence, and expect it to turn out right.”
