sSouth Korea is believed to have signed a secret agreement to send artillery to Ukraine via the United States. This move could bring Seoul into conflict with Moscow and Pyongyang. Nicola Smith is the Telegraph’s Asia correspondent.

According to the Wall Street Journal this agreement will see the United States buy 100,000 rounds of 155mm ammunition for delivery to Ukraine. It is a response to the need of the world to replenish its rapidly diminishing ammunition stocks after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine ten months ago.

Lee Jong Sub was Seoul’s defense Minister. He reportedly “agreed on principle” to this deal when he met with US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin earlier in the month.

This puts South Korea in a potentially proxy war with North Korea. The White House accused North Korea last week, accusing it of providing missiles to Russia via shipments from the Middle East.

However, Seoul can send weapons through the United States to fulfill its public promise not to send lethal military support Kyiv, and also help Washington, its most important ally, in defending South Korea against the nuclear threat from Korea. North.

The ammunition would be enough to supply Ukraine with ammunition for several weeks during a period of war when it began making significant gains in forcing Russian troops out of Kherson, a strategic city.
