After speaking alongside Governor Gavin Newsom of California, the president made the unwritten remarks about relief efforts in the Golden State after the storm-hit state was hit.
As the president was wrapping up, reporters quickly began asking questions about the scandal that had been unfolding over the past two week.
“Do you have any regrets, sir, that you did not disclose the existence of the documents in November before the midterm?”
“What bothers us, frankly is that we have an serious problem here,” Biden stated, referring specifically to storm damage from “atmospheric rivers” storms. “The American people don’t get why you haven’t asked questions about that,” Biden said.
The president did however answer the reporter’s questions.
The president said that he found a number of documents that were not in the right place. We immediately gave them over to the Ministry of Justice and the Department of Archives. We are willing to cooperate and look forward for a quick resolution.
He said, “I think that you’ll find nothing there.” I have no regrets. I do exactly what the lawyers tells me. This is exactly what we do. There are none.
The first batch of about 10 classified documents was found in Biden’s desk at a Washington, D.C. think tank on November 2 — the day before the midterm elections.
Richard Sauber (special counsel to the president) said that the White House informed the National Archives the following day. The discovery was not made public by the Biden administration until January.
