The US National Archives released thousands more documents on the 1963 assassination by then-President John F. Kennedy shortly after President Joe Biden issued a presidential order authorizing their release. This executive order also allowed for the release of hundreds of sensitive records that were kept secret for over a year.

The issuance Document 13173 did not include any new shells nor change the conclusion of the panel headed by Chief Justice Earl Warren, that Lee Harvey Oswald was a former Navy and communist agent who lived in the Soviet Union. The cache will still be useful for historians who want to focus on the events surrounding assassination.

Kennedy was killed in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963 while riding in his motorcade. He was 46.

Many books, articles, TV shows, movies, and TV shows have explored the possibility that Kennedy’s assassination was the product of a complex conspiracy. None of them offered definitive proof that Oswald—who was shot and killed by nightclub owner Jack Ruby two days after Kennedy was killed—was in business with anyone else, though they did maintain a solid cultural coinage.

Many documents released Thursday were part of the CIA, including many that focus on Oswald’s movements and contacts. Other documents are about requests from Warren Commission, which is investigating Oswald’s assassination.

These documents show that Oswald was killed in Kennedy’s death three years prior to his death and Oswald’s escape to the Soviet Union in 1959.

Oswald was described in a December 1963 document as having “intercepted a call” that Oswald made from Mexico City to the Soviet embassy there in October “using his name” while speaking “broken Russian”. Documents show Oswald was looking for a visa and had planned to travel through Cuba in order to reach Russia.

Initial concerns were raised that Robbie (Oswald’s killer) might be related to Oswald. However, a September 1964 memo to the Presidential Commission on the Assassination Investigation stated that “the CIA does not have any evidence that Ruby Harvey Oswald or Lee Harvey Oswald were ever acquainted or that they were related in any other way.”

Congress had in 1992 directed that all files relating to Mr. Kennedy’s investigation be made public by the National Archives. It was to be done in 25 years. The deadline was October 26, 2017.

The 2017 records were released by Donald Trump, who decided to release the rest on a rolling basis.

Original intention was to release all JFK files remaining in October 2021. ADBiden delayed this planned releaseCiting delays caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic, they announced that it would instead be published in two installments: one on Dec 15, 2021 and another by Dec 15, 2022. This was after an extensive review of the data for one year.

Thursday’s release will bring to light 95 percent of the documents from the CIA’s JFK records collection. No redacted or fully redacted documents will be left after “one-year’s intensive review,” a spokesperson for CIA said in a statement. All previously unpublished information.

In a memo, Mr. Biden announced that the National Archives will “jointly” review any revisions to records that have not yet been made public. Following this review, “any information withheld from public disclosure that agencies do not recommend for continued deferment” will be released by June 30, 2023.
