After almost a decade of the UK promising to ban LGBTQ+ conversion therapy in the UK, Ireland is now making steps to ban it.
Roderick O’Gorman is the Equality and Integration Minister and has pledged to introduce legislation to ban “cruel processes rooted in shame-mongering”.

He said, “An operation that seeks or attempts to change someone’s sexual orientation/gender identity is extremely exploitative,” especially if performed on someone younger than 18.
‘I hope to introduce legislation into the Dáil next year.
“Obviously the legislation takes time but I think it could be passed by the end of the year. That is certainly what I would be working towards but it could drift into 2024.”

“From a perspective of understanding some the harm you can cause people, it is something I feel very strongly and it is something I really want for my role as Minister of Equalities.”

Ireland has pledged to ban conversion practices that aim to change a person’s gender identity or sexual orientation. It joins the growing number countries around the globe that have taken decisive action to protect their LGBTQ citizens.

Jayne Ozanne, a former adviser to the British LGBTQ+ community, stated that she wished the UK could achieve the same speed as Ireland in preventing conversion therapy.
Metro.co.uk spoke to her: “I am delighted that the Irish Government is working aggressively for a complete ban against abusive ‘conversion therapy.
“It seems very suspicious to me that the UK government is taking so long to do the right and decent thing, which they have been promising for almost five years now.”
After years of delays, the UK government has been silent on Ireland’s plans to ban conversion to Islam by 2024.
In 2018, Theresa May, then-Prime Minster, made a simple promise: to ban conversion therapy.
But years of political turmoil, including Brexit and the resignations of Liz Truss as well as the resignations of Boris Johnson (and Liz Truss) have thrown many breaks into the plan.
Equality officials had hoped to get the ban on the books by the spring of last year — it never happened.
A consultation on the ban — which LGBTQ+ activists saw as a form of delay — has been delayed for months.

But there was a catch — the ban will no longer cover trans and non-binary people even though they are more likely to have undergone the practice.

Uzanne said that “Minister Badenoch has secretly caused delays, having failed in to indicate when the groundbreaking LGBT+ Policy – announced in two Queen’s Speeches- will finally be implemented.”
