Ineos is reported to be in talks to build a small nuclear power plant and operate the Scottish chemical refinery.
According to the Sunday Telegraph, the Grangemouth plant, jointly owned by PetroChina and China, will have to reach net zero by 2045 in order to meet the Scottish government’s environmental goals.
Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish First Minister, was against a new nuclear build Power plantsThe government has recently stated that it will be looking into new technology such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) using existing technology.
The SMR is cheaper and easier to build because of their ease of assembly. Rolls-Royce plans to build 30 of these cars.
The manufacturer is waiting for both the regulators’ approval and the support of the customers to get behind the project.
In 2030, the first prototypes will also be operational.
A company spokesperson told the outlet: “Rolls-Royce SMR is talking to a number of industrial customers who see huge potential in using UK-developed technology to provide affordable, long-term, low-carbon electricity, generated from a sustainable source.”
