Suela BravermanA Holocaust survivor confronted him because he claimed that the UK was facing her “Invade”By asylum seekers
The Home Secretary was told that the comments reminded him of “the language used for dehumanizing my family and millions of other people and justifying their killing.”
Braverman’s initial remarks were made in October in the House of Commons during a debate about the number of small boats that cross the English Channel from France into the UK.
She said, “The British people should know who is serious in stopping the invasion on our South Coast,”
At a town hall event in her constituency Fareham last night, a woman in the audience told her: “I am a child survivor of the Holocaust. I was forced from Belgium to flee my home in 1943. I went through war-torn Europe to reach the United Kingdom in 1947.
“Now, when I hear you use words against refugees like ‘swarms’ and ‘invasion’, I am reminded of the language used to dehumanize my family and millions of others and justify their killing.
“Why do you feel the need to use such a language?”
Braverman responded to the woman by saying that her father had been “thrown from Kenya” and sought refuge in Britain, while her mother had arrived from Mauritius at the age of 18 to work as an nurse.
She said: “They owe everything to this country and have taught me a deep, deep love for Britain and the British people – tolerance, generosity, decency and fair play.
This also means that it is important to not hide the fact that there is an issue and that illegal immigration is a major problem we are facing now, a problem we didn’t realize before.
“And I will not apologize for the language I used to establish the scale of the problem. My job is to be honest with the British people, and with the British people.
“I will not shy away from hard truths, nor will I hide the truth we are all observing.”
In a statement on Twitter, the Home Office said: “The Home Secretary listened carefully to the testimony. I thanked her and her story.
The Home Secretary also expressed sympathy and explained the importance of addressing illegal immigration.
