It is, naturally, a high-purity Nirvan. The Rig must be consumed like a Quality Street Tin. It’s relentless. One pause in action can lead viewers to dissent. Questions like “Isn’t this a little silly?” Questions like “What was David MacPherson talking to when he picked up his pen?” You shouldn’t be afraid of the suites. But the direction, editing, and performances are all top-notch. The Rig is a six-hour disaster movie in the ’70s style. It reveals the cause of the disaster as a mind-boggling, yet immediately explicable mystery.
