Harvey Weinstein, disgraced film producer, has been found guilty in Los Angeles court of rape.
After nine days of deliberations that lasted more than two weeks, the jury, consisting of eight men, and four women, reached the verdict in the second criminal case against the 70-year old movie mogul. He was sentenced to two years to a maximum of 23 years for a New York rape and sexual assault conviction. .
Weinstein was charged with raping and assaulting two women in California and with committing sexual battery against two other women.
The jury found him guilty for raping a woman but not sexual assault by restraint to another woman.
The jury could not reach a verdict on the allegations against the two other women. These charges were dismissed and a mistrial was declared.
When he is sentenced, the Oscar-winning film producer could spend up to 24 years behind bars. The verdict was not immediately commented on by the defense attorneys or plaintiffs.
Marilyn Martinez, Deputy attorney general, stated that it was time to end the defendant’s reign of terror in the prosecution’s closing argument. “It’s now that the kingmaker is brought to justice.”
