Atkinson said to the court: “She saw defendant standing on side of road with her children.
“The defendant was confused, extremely upset, and shocked and said ‘I was hit on the head with a motorcycle. It was my fault. I was driving on the wrong side.
She said, “I’ve only been there for two weeks.” Mrs. Hewitt saw Harry Dunn’s body lying on the roadside, near a Volvo.
“He was conscious, but he was face down. He repeated his request repeatedly: “Don’t let me go to death!”
The court heard that Mr Dunn was able tell the Department of Defense Police, who arrived on scene, that Sacoolas was driving wrong side of the road.
I drove on the American side.
Sacoolas did not leave the scene but was noticed by Northamptonshire Police officers as she sobbed and held her head in her hands. She admitted that she made a mistake and the judge said that she was very stupid. Mr. Dunn later died in hospital.
Sacoolas stated that she drove on the American side only five times in a voluntary interview with police in October 2019.
Ben Cooper KC, as mitigation, read a statement by Sacoolas expressing her deep regret for the pain she had caused.
According to the statement, her actions were “to regret it every single day”, and she added: “There isn’t a day that goes past that I don’t think about Harry.”
