There is a reason the origin Gavin and Stacey The Christmas episode is consistently hailed as one of the best festive TV shows of all time — it’s a masterpiece, as we did. We wrote ourselves previously.
The episode, which sees West & the chipmunks spend Christmas together as extended families, initially drew more than 7 million viewers when it first aired on Christmas Eve 2008
We’re sharing secrets that even the most ardent fans might not know.
1. The October 2008 special, filmed in and around Bari, took 12 days to film. The team had only two months left to edit it before it was put on TV.
2. It was created after the creators and writers. Ruth JonesThen there is the James CordenHe was too busy to do a whole series new, but could still fit in for a series special.
3. They were also intrigued by the idea of getting the Shipmans and Wests together for Christmas, and the chance to explore different festive weaknesses.
4. According to Ruth Jones (Nyssa), several actors contracted the flu while filming. Radio TimesAnd there was a particular doctor.
5. The first scene that the cast and crew shot was when Smithy visited Stacey at work to request her help with Christmas shopping.
6. The scene was filmed at Culverhouse cross Marks & Scott, just outside Cardiff. However, the store is actually in Essex.

8. Another spot you might have seen in the special is Cardiff Gate’s welcome break. This is where Barry Square stops while on his way to Essex.
9. The kid who played Neil was very sick while filming at Services.
10. JAMES WAS NOT DRIVING Smithy’s car in the scene when he sings Do They know It’s Christmas down the telephone with Gavin. The crew used a low loader which basically tows Smithy’s car.
11. Matthew HornJames filmed Gavin’s parts while he sat at the back of the low-loader, and Gavin sang along to the microphone so James could hear his car. He then filmed the scene in his own part as Gavin.
12. Zack, Ruth’s real-life nephew, played the role of the kid who visited Ness’s Grotto.
13. Matthew tore his pants while filming the scene in which Gavin and Stacey returned home on Christmas Eve.
14. Because it involved all 12 characters, the director was terrified by the Christmas Eve fight scene. Ruth admitted that she had to warn him after she wrote it.
15. Everyone enjoyed a Christmas dinner cooked on location in Pam’s real-life kitchen. Ruth revealed that it was prepared by Mick and Ruth. Radio Times2017
16. The mammoth scene in the final day of the 12-day shoot was filmed, and promotional and press photos were taken at the house in between takes.
17. James was also seen taking a nap on Chipmans’ living-room couch while Joella Davis (Dawn), painted his face.
18. The final scene was shot on the last day. It featured Nyssa proposing to Dave.
19. There was a sense from James that the cast would “never make Christmas special again” — but thankfully that proved not to be the case, when the follow-up finally arrived in 2019…
