Lampard tried to show that he still has the drive and confidence to lead the club’s rebuilding process. He argued that the team faces difficult times. Support groups and fan sites have written to Moshiri requesting that he “make radical changes at the presidency and board levels.”
“I don’t need a vote of confidence,” said Lampard. “I don’t think it would mean much. I had private conversations behind closed doors, and those are the important conversations. I am also a big guy. I understand the way the world works. I don’t assume anything. I am preparing for Manchester United.
“I came here with my eyes open. I don’t fear anything. Last year was a clear sign of the truth. When I arrived, we were in a relegation fight. It’s a fact that I can be completely open about. You don’t have to hide behind anything. To improve, you don’t need to hide behind anything.
The truth is simple. People talk about Everton, and claim they haven’t been relegated for years. They never should. This is not true. We must be real, show it and act it, just like we did in last season’s second leg.
“I remember sitting here last season and seeing on Sky News my job was under threat after that [losing to] burnley. Does it look different this year? Yes, it does. You have a preseason and you bring in some players before you start a season.
“But does the Premier League look any different around us?” Yes. Nottingham Forest showed up and spent £150m. While I don’t want them to be viewed as a single club, my larger view is that each individual is trying to improve their game. We all want to improve our ways and fight for it.
