A magnetic bracelet was found in the stomach of a four-year old boy who suffers from intense pain.

A disturbing case study published by In Journal of Pediatric SurgeryIn the February 2023 issue (which will be out next month), the boy swallowed several magnetic beads. He was in pain for two more days before they could be removed.

Doctors state that the child “appeared with features initially resembling acute appendicitis and later intestinal obstruction. He initially underwent an open appendectomy which did not improve the clinical condition.”

After further evaluation, he performed laparotomy which included retrieval of swallowed bead and repair of intestinal perforations.

The doctors — Masalama Elada, Michael Agawa, Abdel Rashid Nasir, and Kenneth O’Amachi who reported on the case — said that “accidental ingestion of magnetic beads is a common problem among children worldwide” and that “despite its increasing prevalence, there is usually a lack of diagnosis and management.” are inaccurate, which often leads to severe morbidity in patients.”

According to the magazine, most of the cases reported occur between the ages 1 and 17.

The boy’s parents did not know that the boy had swallowed foreign objects. The case study indicated that “it is possible that the metallic taste of the magnetic beads motivated the child to continue to explore them in his mouth and then swallow them further even though the parents denied the source of the beads and not one of their household items”.

A five-year-old boy in China also swallowed magnetic pills, which doctors later removed from his body.
