Five African lions escaped from Taronga Zoo, Sydney Harbor side, on Wednesday. This prompted an emergency closure and police and specialists raced to capture the pride.
Alarms went off throughout zoo, which was closed to the public at that point. The alarms were set off before the lions were found and returned to their gallery.
Simon Duffy, the executive director of the zoo, stated to reporters that a lion cub should be calmed.
He said, “This is a major accident and a thorough review is now underway in order to determine exactly how the Lions managed to escape their main show.”
We don’t know the exact details of what happened.
Taronga Zoo, located in a leafy area with views of Sydney Opera House and Harbor Bridge, said that it will open as normal later in the day.
Zoo keepers can be seen inspecting the fences of the lion’s barn for signs and damage.
The zoo is home to two adult lions, Mother Maya, and Abi Atto. It also houses five cubs, Khari, Luzuko and Malika.
A two-year old Bengal tiger, escaped from Taronga Zoo in 1946. He wandered the grounds in a “boutof terror” before being shot by a zookeeper.
In 1982, around 20 police officers were dispatched to a suburb of Sydney after a lion was reported near a soft drinks factory. The culprit was later revealed to be a kitten named Ginger.
