Jose MourinhoHe is expected to succeed Fernando Santos, Portugal coach, who was fired following the shock. world Cup Exit.
After almost a week of speculation Santos was officially dismissed on Thursday after a quarter-final defeat to the dark horses from Morocco.
Portugal lost to Uruguay and Ghana in group play and fell to Switzerland 6-1 in the round 16. It was a disappointing end to a promising campaign.
Santos was the national team’s coach for eight years. He led them to victory at Euro 2016 and the Nations League 2019. This was the first major honour in Portugal’s history.
The 68-year old has been appointed to lead the team to Euro 2024, but the French Football Federation is now looking for his replacement.
Paulo Fonseca, Lille coach has been mentioned as a possible candidate. However, according to reports in Italy Jose Mourinho could be the next national team manager.
Mourinho was the most successful Portuguese coach of all time, managing some the largest clubs in the world, such as Porto, Chelsea (Inter Milan), Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham, and currently Roma.
His trophy cabinet includes eight league championship titles and two Champions League title titles. But he has never been an international success story.
Although he seems committed to his job at Roma he is being reported to have been open to taking on dual roles that would allow for him to manage both club & country.
Portugal’s national team will be in transition as Cristiano Ronaldo, who was a victim of the 2022 World Cup, will likely retire from international duty soon.
The qualifying matches for the European Nations Cup 2024 will be held in Germany in March. Portugal will face Liechtenstein in the first match and Luxembourg in the second.
