Chopankar Sharma of India had held the lead with his playing partners Fleetwood, Fox after 15 holes. However, he fell past 16th-17th and had to settle for a ninth-place finish.

Fleetwood defeated Marcus Kinholt from Swede on the first extra hole in a playoff match at Gary Player Country Club, November 2019 to win his fifth title with the DP World Tour.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the tournament was cancelled in 2020 and 2021. The Ryder Cup star failed to win any more matches to his Sun City success until this week.

Fleetwood stated that “One of my greatest goals in awhile is to win here with my whole family,” and that he was not playing Thursday because he was ill.

“Frankie (his son) always says I never win anything, he brings the medals home from school and says this because you never won in golf. I wanted to win with them here for so long, they came, and now they are gone!”

Tommy Fleetwood

It’s been a great week. I have great memories from this place already and felt a great connection with him so he just added to that. It was a great feeling dropping him in ninth with a chance of winning and fighting it out.

Fleetwood, who started round three with Rasmus Hoggard scoring three shots, was defeated by Fleetwood in the sixth round. He then took one shot back before lightning struck the area.

After a delay of three and a quarter hours, play resumed. When Hojgaard had dropped four shots in the three hole space, Fleetwood and Fox moved on to Chief Affairs.

Fleetwood finished 12th, but he was unable to escape a bunker in the 15th. Sharma and Fox made flyovers to make it an unlikely eagle.

Sharma fell from the lead with an expensive birdie on the 16th and 17th. Fleetwood nearly hid at 50ft on The 18th for a winning par-3 birdie, but Fox failed to keep an equal footing from the back.

Fleetwood refused to cry on the 18th green, and then praised the on-site doctor for getting it throughout the week.

“The doctor here was amazing,” he said. “I gave his young son the winning golf ball because without him there was no chance to play on Thursday.

“She wasn’t certain what the weather would do, so she just thought that if I could keep playing you wouldn’t know what was going down at the end.

Fox would have fixed it Rory McIlroyWith his third win in the season, he took first place in DP World’s standings in Dubai. He was also within 128 points of world number one.

He said that he had closed at 68. “I played really well and didn’t miss a shot all day until 18. I would love to have another chance to play that hole.

“I’m still really happy. I don’t think I finished inside the top 50 here in three starts, so if you had given me second place at the start of the week and closed the gap with a decent amount on Rory, I would have had it.”
