Edwin Butts, a former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, defended an apparent attempt at changing the system northern IrelandProtocol bill
The formation of the Executive Council and Assembly in Northern Ireland was stopped by the British government DUPProtesting protocol. Mr. Potts however, said he supported it.
According to The Financial Times, Potts was Minister for Agriculture at the time and wrote to the British Minister for Environment. George EstesNorthern Ireland farmers will be forced to accept the same farm subsidies as the rest in the UK, unless they declare it unacceptable by July 2021.
He stated that the state aid arrangements for the protocol… in agriculture, allow Northern Ireland great policy flexibility.”
“The Northern Ireland Protocol Act proposes to reject the subsidy control approach we currently have (which works) and to extend the[UK Subsidy Control Act](which is not working) to Northern Ireland. This is unacceptable and we need a solution.”
On Friday, Mr Potts said to the newspaper that he had “reasonably recommended one change that would enhance the UK’s capability to use state assistance under WTO rules.”
He added: “If the NI Protocol Bill were to move forward in its current form, it would remove the EU state aid framework and bring NI farming into the scope of the UK’s domestic support control system.
“This imposes a different set of requirements and the agricultural policy framework will need to be evaluated in the light of this different system.”
It is because Sir Geoffrey Donaldson (potts’ successor) said that the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Good Friday Agreement would pass with Stormont’s no government unless protocol was replaced.
speaks in LondonThe leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, Martin Griffiths, said Thursday that the post-Brexit trade agreement should be replaced with union-backed agreements.
The DUP insists it will not support a Stormont return until the economic barriers to trade between Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Protocol are removed.
Chris Heaton-Harris, Northern Ireland Minister, introduced legislation earlier this week to extend the deadline for the formation of a Northern Ireland executive and to reduce the salaries of MLAs.
