James Cleverly warned of China’s threat to a number key UK institutions during his first major speech in office as Foreign Secretary.
“China has threatened a number of those building blocks that we feel are important,” Cleverly said today, while also stressing that Britain needs to cooperate with Beijing on climate change and other key issues.
Tomorrow, Secretary of State Brilliant will deliver his first major speech. He is expected to call on the United States to strengthen ties with African, Latin American, and Asian countries.
It will also be expected to determine further UK strategy toward China. This is after Prime Minister Rishi Sanak recently stated that the UK needed to have a closer relationship with Beijing.
Sunak, who referred to China as the greatest threat to the UK in the Conservative Party leadership race, has since retract his remarks.
Cleverly, the UK cannot ignore China’s involvement in many global issues. However, Cleverly also warned of Beijing’s attempts to undermine UK security.
Cleverly stated, “We must think long-term. We need to think longer-term about standing up to the principles and institutions we know have kept our safety for decades.”
“China has threatened many of the bedrocks that are important to us, and we’re going together with our old and new friends to ensure that we protect those things that we need.”
