Vllaznia 0 Chelsea 4
After beating Vllaznia in Albania 4-0, Chelsea and Arsenal reached the quarter-finals this season of the Women’s Champions League without looking tired.
Since Chelsea’s defeat of the Albanian champions in London 8-0 in October, this fixture was more likely to be about “how many?” Team Emma Hayes won in favor of the team, rather than getting the win they knew would get them through to the knockout stage. The result was clear.
Arsenal mathematically secured their passage to the quarter-finals for Group C on Thursday despite losing 1-0 against Lyon. This means that the English Premier League will have 2 representatives in the February draw for the quarter-finals.
If Paris Saint-Germain fails against Real Madrid in the second leg, Chelsea will be the top of Group A. The team was as dominant on Friday as expected with 18 corner kicks to Vllaznia’s one, 10 shots at goal to none for their hosts, and 70% of possession.
The Vllaznia youth – whose oldest player was 28 and most of them were 21-year-old or younger – offered no offensive threat, but their defense significantly improved on their performance at Kingsmeadow. They scored no points in this group. After the excellent work of Guru Ritten, Sophie Engel from Wales took the lead. A set-piece allowed Fran Kirby to score Chelsea’s second goal in a moment when he was not there. Vllaznia was ready for the free kick.
Chelsea were forced to wait for their third and fourth goals, but they were eventually held back by Katerina Svetkova’s near-post header from Jelena Kanković’s superb cross, before goalkeeper Marin Milde sent the wrong way from the penalty spot in second-half stoppage time, as Chelsea made it all the way to the right. His 13th win this season from 15 away matches.
