France’s Academy Césars, France’s version of the Oscars, has announced that anyone under investigation for sexual crimes will be banned from its 2023 ceremony.
The prestigious César Awards, scheduled for February 25, announced the move out of respect for any potential victims, even if they are just ‘presumed’ victims.
After it was revealed that Sofiane Bennacer, a rising actor, was being investigated for allegations regarding rape and violence, there were fears of protests at this year’s award ceremony.
The 25-year old, who was at the heart of the awards ceremony and was shortlisted to play in Les Amandiers (Forever Young), denied the allegations. After the allegations, the Academy decided to remove him from the Academy’s shortlist.
The academy stated in a statement that anyone who faces a possible prison sentence for violence, particularly (a sexual or sexual nature), would be excluded from the ceremony this year.
“It was decided not to highlight people who may have been held accountable by the judiciary for acts of violence,” the statement said, adding that the move was “out of respect for the victims” and even if it was “supposed” only the victims.

Polanski confessed to having unconstitutional sex with a minor in 1997. He spent six weeks in prison, but fled the United States in fear that his plea agreement would be overturned.
Valentine Meunier, a former model, accused Polanski of raping him in 1975. Polanski’s attorney stated that he had disputed the allegation in the strongest terms.
Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Les Amandiers director, referred to the Bennacer allegations earlier in her response.
On Instagram, she stated that producers of the film were aware of the allegations. She said, “But they wouldn’t stop us and I couldn’t picture making the movie without them.”
The Academy is yet to make long-term changes in eligibility rules for people with convictions or allegations of sexual misconduct. A vote is expected in the first half 2023.
