Capital Xtra radio host Will NjobvuHe believes that the media’s insufficient representation of black people is not due to this. Love Island.

The latest Channel 4 documentary entitled Life after Love IslandThe 35-year old presenter speaks with former contestants of the hit dating show, to discuss the downsides to fame once they leave the villa.

The ITV2 phenomenon began in 2015 and has welcomed more 259 candidates. A documentary broadcast on December 1st revealed that 28 have landed lucrative deals while over 130 have returned back to their regular jobs.

Ikenna Ekwonna is the Series 8 star. He explained that he quit his job in drug sales to pursue a career of content creation. But he hasn’t had much luck.

The special also highlights the 22% gap in pay between black and white influencers. This includes stars like Molly May Hague or Ekin-Su Kolkologlou, and Gemma Owen joining forces with Pretty Little Thing or Oh Polly.

Will believes that Love Island, despite being the common ground of all the stars of the show, is not responsible for the lack of black representation.

He said that he realized one thing from the doc: “This isn’t a problem with ITV, it’s an issue societally.”

“India [Polack]After leaving the show, she is the first black woman who has reached 1 million followers. This is not production related, this is what society considers beautiful.

He said, “There is a desirable appearance, as one contributor mentioned. Unfortunately, we aren’t in an era when darker skin is so coveted and admired by the media and society. There is much work to do.

The documentary also showed Coco Lodge, an ex-love islander, express her initial expectations before appearing on the program.

She said, “The ideal scenario would have one or two million followers.”

Devoted Love Island fans will be in for a treat next year, as the show is slated to return in winter and summer — with a winter edition hosted by Maya Jama — but Will thinks aspirants should lower their expectations before applying.

He stated that everyone involved in a show such as this should have the right expectations.

Keep having fun, enjoy yourself, and stop aspiring to be a millionaire.

“That’s how people get upset and then develop these problems because it’s because they think they’re failing. However, their expectations must be managed.”
