Simpson’s Tavern has been 200 yards from the Royal Exchange since 1757—but rent arrears due to the appearance of the pandemic will see the historic Square Mile establishment closed for good.
The Bermuda-based Tavor Holdingss, who had been requesting rent payments since the pandemic, closed the doors.

City AM’s Benjamin Duggan, Simpson’s’ director, stated that the business was solvent, and saw higher revenue and volume in Oct 2022 than it did October 2019, before the pandemic.
Last Friday, the landlord gave the company a liquidation petition regarding rent arrears.
Duggan stated that “they are not at all ready for involvement.”
“We are a solvent company, so we can pay off our debts with a reasonable horizon, which most owners have responded to this problem.
“We’re all stunned this side of the things, to be completely honest with you,” he said.
Many landlords have decided to waive rents accrued during the pandemic, or to renegotiate how they pay arrears once the hospitality businesses have paid them. In particular, she was able to reopen. Other owners had difficulty filling the vacant positions.
Duggan claimed that the landlord rejected a “reasonable offer” to pay the rent in full over the term of their existing lease, which was negotiated 2018 and instead demanded an “immediate cash payment.”

“It would be a shame if this historical corpse remained empty for what we imagine it will be for such a long period of time,” Duggan said.
“I have a lot of regulars who had their first lunch in town at Simpson. Getting rid of that would be a real loss for the town.”
