Television images show that supporters of Jair Bolsonaro, the former Brazilian President, stormed the Supreme Court, the Congress building, and surrounded the presidential palace at Brasilia on Sunday.
Many thousand protestors stormed buildings, echoing the January 6, 2021 invasion of the US Capitol by supporters under former US President Donald Trump. They were also seen on television smashing furniture inside Congress and the Supreme Court. Local media estimates that around 3,000 people were involved.
Many protestors question the outcome of October 30 elections in which leftists were present Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva Beat Bolsonaro. Many of his hard-line supporters have doubted the reliability and legitimacy of the country’s electronic voting systems.
Bolsonaro fled Brazil for Florida 48 hours prior to the end of his term.
Lula was in São Paulo for the weekend and on a trip to the interior of the state.
Lula’s PT asked for the Public Prosecutor’s Office’s order to direct the public security forces working to contain the demonstrators.
