Marcos Acuna was replaced in Argentina’s starting line-up world CupFinal against France after failing a late fitness test.
The left-back was to begin in Doha today. However, eyebrows rose after Nicolas Tagliafico won the race.
Acuna is a stronger defender than Tagliafico, and has been designated to play against Ousmane Dembole.
However, reports in Argentina claim that Acuna was suffering from muscle injuries on the day of match and was therefore unfit to begin.
Lionel Scaloni switched between the two during the tournament and had considered playing in the back three with Lisandro Martínez coming into the side and Acuna playing left back.
But Acuna’s injury meant Scaloni’s only change from the semi-finals came in the form of Ángel Di Maria joining Leandro Paredes’ side.
The former Manchester United winger was unable to play nine minutes of the knockout stage due to a groin issue, but felt that dribbling was necessary for Theo Hernandez, who struggled against Bukayo Saka in the quarter-finals.
