The first HomePod, which was announced in June 2017, was released in February 2018. The HomePod received mixed reviews at launch. There was widespread praise for the sound quality and criticism for the high price.
But in 2021, it was discontinued—which many had hoped would be done in favor of the second generation, which never arrived.
This mysterious end of the HomePod line meant Apple was only selling the HomePod Mini 2020 and that there was no other version of the smart talking on sale.
Apple has brought back the larger version, which it’s calling its second generation, of the HomePod.
The speaker looks very similar to the current speaker and has a nearly identical design and sound system. It integrates with Apple’s ecosystem, and also includes room-sensing technology to adapt sound to its surroundings.
The second-generation HomePod also includes new smart home and voice recognition capabilities, including the ability to control other devices and check the temperature.
The speaker setup seems to be identical or similar to the HomePod’s previous version. But it does include a new chip — the S7, which powers the Apple Watch Series 7 — and Apple has suggested that the software will allow for a better listening experience than the previous version.
It’s also much cheaper than the previous HomePod. At launch, this speaker was priced at $349—although often discounted—but the new version is priced at $299 in the US.
It is available for order now and will be made available by Apple on February 3, Apple announced.
The new HomePod’s announcement comes just days after Apple announced new M2 chips that will power three updated computers: the Mac Mini and MacBook Pro (14-inch and 16 inch versions), and the MacBook Pro (16-inch).
Some reports suggested that Apple might have planned to launch all these products at a live event, which would have also included the unveiling of the long-rumored mixed realities headset. This headset has been delayed and it is believed that Apple will announce the remaining products via updates on its website.
